| Suki |
| Meet Suki, wonder-dog extraordinaire! She came to SFASHS after being hit by a car, unable to use her back legs. But this 6 year old beauty did not let that stop her. With TLC from the Shelter and the wonderful Sue Kelvey at Bounce Back Integrative Veterinary Rehabilitation (Bouncebackvetrehab.com) she can walk and is getting stronger with every visit! So far she has gone to Bounce Back twice, with her last visit on 05/01/13. Right now she is getting acupuncture which she loves! As well as hydrotherapy and she is doing great with sit/stands to help build muscle tone, which has improved already by her second visit! Come meet Suki and fall in love with this special, gentle-hearted girl. She also gets along with other dogs and is generally pretty polite! So if you think she would be a good fit, please consider her! |

COME ADOPT!
Many of the Edgewood 48 dogs for adoption
SANTA FE — The Santa Fe Animal Shelter is urging the community to come forward and adopt dogs involved in the alleged hoarding case in Edgewood – the so-called Edgewood 48. The 33 dogs released recently to the custody of the shelter are among the 48 seized in April at an Edgewood home. The owner relinquished her rights to the majority of the dogs in May. She agreed to pay for the upkeep and care of 10 of the dogs until the court case is resolved. She faces charges of animal cruelty. “We know many of you have asked when and if these dogs would be available for adoption,” said Mary Martin, the shelter’s executive director. “Many of these kiddos will be available within 48 hours, and we urge anyone who has room in their heart and home for a dog that may need a little extra TLC to come meet them.” Some of the dogs are puppies and will require very little from new families aside from regular training and love. Others are timid at first, under-socialized or fearful and will require patience and training. Santa Fe Tails Dog Academy & Daycare will be offering some of the dogs care and socialization to improve their adoptability and to help ease the shelter’s space crunch. You can visit them there, 2109 Warner Circle off St. Michael's Drive, and adopt! Call 820-0731 for more information. Emily Burlingame, the shelter’s behavior and training team leader, who has worked with all of the dogs in the case, said the dogs are really coming around considering their circumstances. She said the vast majority of the heeler mixes will make loving family pets once they adjust to their new lives. The dogs will be available after their spay and neuter surgeries. To encourage adoptions, the shelter will be offering a special adoption fee of $48 for the adult dogs - 1 year and older - involved in the case. The 41 puppies born at the shelter from the six pregnant dogs in the case are the property of the shelter and will be available once they are weaned, spayed and neutered. For more information about adoptions, please call the shelter’s Adoption Desk at 983-4309 ext. 610. Check the shelter’s Facebook page, facebook.com/sfhumanesociety, for current photos of the adoptable dogs. Read More. |

STRUT YOUR MUTT
Join our virtual team of walkers
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter is teaming up with Strut Your Mutt Across America and we need team members! This virtual team of walkers will collect online donations to help fund adoption and spay/neuter programs here at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. This nationwide event runs from now until Sept. 1. We do not have a physical walk here in New Mexico, so we're participating in the virtual strut across America. This means there is no physical activity required and all team members need to do is register and solicit donations from their friends and family. Plus, anyone who registers to be part of our team before May 19 receives a discounted registration rate of just $5. We've set a lofty goal of raising $8,000, so we need your help to raise funds. It's a fun event with very little time required from our virtual walkers. So join the Santa Fe Animal Shelter dog pack and help a very worthy cause! Join the SFAS Strut Your Mutt Team Are you unable to join the team but still want to help the cause? Just make a donation ... every dollar counts, so donations as small as $1 are accepted and welcomed. SPRING APPEAL
Help us give all animals a bright future
The 48 dogs came overnight – one moment we were busy with the day-to-day needs of all animals in our community, and the next our resources were overwhelmed with dogs involved in the Edgewood hoarding case. We quickly worked with our partners, securing temporary homes for our Shelter dogs as we made space for these neglected animals, not knowing when or if we would gain custody of them. Just a few weeks earlier, we took on 56 cats involved in a separate hoarding case. In that particular case, we worked with the woman and mental health professionals to ensure the cats were cared for and the woman got the help she needed. The Edgewood case has been different. As court evidence, we weren’t allowed to spay or neuter the animals, and seven were pregnant. Soon, the Edgewood 48 turned into 78. Our teams of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, trainers and animal care staff work every hour of every day to try and make a difficult situation better for all the dogs in our care, but especially for these formerly neglected animals. For the first few weeks, most of the dogs were terrified of just about everything — the building, the noise, the different routine. Today, I’m happy to tell you that they are coming around and itching to get into happy homes. The majority of the dogs were recently released into our custody, and in the first three days of their release, eight found loving homes. Read More. |

ROAD WORK THIS SUMMER
Expect some delays on Caja del Rio Road
The second stage of road improvements for our area may cause some slight delays to get here, but our animals are worth it! The reconstruction for the southern segment of Caja Del Rio Rd (NM 599 intersection to just past Wildlife Way) started on April 1 and will continue through the fall. We'll try to keep you updated about the construction. The good news is that the Meadows Road interchange across N.M. 599 (Veterans Memorial Highway) is now open. Drivers may now use the interchange to cross the highway and gain access to the shelter. Roundabouts are located on each side of the overpass on County Road 62, also known as Caja del Oro Grant Road. Here are the detailed directions: Read More. |

PAWS IN THE PANTRY
Shelter pet food assistance program
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter understands that financial difficulty often means making a list of priorities. Frequently, animals are forced to be low on that list. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s Paws in the Pantry program helps Santa Fe County residents who are having difficulty meeting the nutritional needs of their dog or cat due to financial burden. Trying times can be temporary. With a little assistance, a pet owner can often find a way to keep their pet in their home. Please call the Shelter for more information about the program, 983-4309 ext. 610, or download the Guidelines and Application Form and bring it to the Shelter with you. We gladly accept donations for the program. We accept opened bags of dog and cat food as long as they: are in their original container; are not expired by more than six months; and do not contain any foreign objects as wood, sand, etc. Read More. |

KEEP YOUR PET SAFE
Nothing says love like a cheap metal tag
Canvassers with the Santa Fe Animal Shelter are hitting the streets to complete a census of companion animals in our region and provide pet owners with information about licensing. The City of Santa Fe and the Santa Fe County require that all companion animals are licensed, said Monica Gonzalez, the shelter’s director of licensing and receiving. But being compliant with the law isn’t the only reason to license pets, she said. Aside from health and safety reasons, licensing is the best way for wayward pets to get back to their owners. “It’s a fact that dogs and cats who wear a city or county license will be returned to their owners 100 percent of the time,” she said. “There isn’t any other type of identification that is as effective, not even a microchip.” Read More. |
